Dominica - After the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria in 2017, Roseau, the capital of Dominica, underwent a long road of recovery and rebuilding. Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the city’s infrastructure, caused significant damage to houses, buildings, and roads, and drastically altered the landscape of Roseau. Despite these hardships, the community of Roseau showed resilience and determination to restore their city and breathe new life into it. Immediately after Hurricane Maria, emergency aid and rebuilding efforts began to restore Roseau. The international community, along with local government agencies and non-governmental organizations, worked together to restore essential services such as electricity, water, and communications, and to provide emergency shelter for those who lost their homes. One of the main priorities was restoring the economy of Roseau. Many businesses and shops were heavily damaged by the storm, making it difficult for locals to earn a living. By investing in business reconstruction and reopening, the government stimulated the economy and created new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. The rebuilding of Roseau’s infrastructure was a lengthy process that required considerable effort. Roads had to be repaired, bridges rebuilt, and damaged buildings renovated or replaced. Measures were also taken to better prepare the city for future natural disasters, such as strengthening building codes and improving warning systems. Over time, Roseau’s recovery began to bear fruit. The city slowly but surely regained its vitality and liveliness, with reopened shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions welcoming visitors. Today, Roseau stands as a symbol of hope and resilience—a vibrant and dynamic capital ready to face future challenges. The lessons learned from Hurricane Maria’s experience have better prepared the city to cope with future storms while continuing to thrive as a flourishing center of culture, commerce, and community life.
