Hong_Kong - Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, located in Southeast Asia. Its official name is “Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.” The area consists of 236 islands with a total surface area of 1,099 km² and borders the South China Sea. Approximately seven million people live there. The name Hong Kong is derived from the pronunciation in the local Standard Cantonese dialect: Heung Kôong, meaning “fragrant harbor.” Originally, this was just the name of a settlement in what is now Aberdeen. The origin is unclear, but historians suggest the name comes from the incense trade that once took place there. Hong Kong consists of the island of the same name (east of the Pearl River) with an area of 78 km², the Kowloon Peninsula (about 47 km²), and the New Territories (974 km²). The New Territories comprise the area north of Kowloon bordering mainland China and include 235 islands, most of which are uninhabited. Lantau Island is the largest (146 km²), followed by Hong Kong Island. Today, Hong Kong is a relatively young metropolis by Asian standards and a large, modern city. It ranks in the top 10 global cities. Since 2005, Donald Tsang has served as Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, succeeding Tung Chee Hwa.
