Maldives - The Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an island nation consisting of 1,190 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean southwest of India. The islands are spread over an area of about 90,000 km², but the total land area is only about 298 km². The largest island is 5 km², and only nine islands are larger than 2 km². Two hundred islands are inhabited, and another 88 are dedicated to tourism. Because the Maldives lie near the equator, the climate is influenced by the trade winds. October sees the strongest winds, marking the transition from the wet season (with July and August being the wettest months) to the dry season, which lasts from December to April. The average daytime temperature is about 28°C. Due to its location in the middle of the ocean, humidity is high. The Maldives is a popular diving destination and offers numerous diving spots.
