Philippines - The underground river of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park on the island of Palawan is one of the most impressive natural wonders of Southeast Asia. This river flows largely through an enormous limestone cave system and empties directly into the sea, which is quite unique in the world. The underground river is approximately 8 kilometres long, part of which is accessible to visitors by boat. During a tour, you glide in silence through a dark cave while impressive stalactites and stalagmites rise above and beside you in all kinds of shapes. Some rock formations resemble cathedrals, animals, or even human figures, stimulating the imagination. The area is part of a protected nature park and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ecosystem is remarkably rich: besides the spectacular caves, the park is home to numerous animal species, including monkeys, monitor lizards, and bats that inhabit the caves. What makes this river even more special is the transition between fresh and salt water influenced by the tides. This creates a unique ecosystem in which various plant and animal species have adapted to the changing conditions. A visit to this underground river is a combination of adventure and nature experience. The mysterious darkness, the sound of dripping water, and the immense space of the caves make it an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of a trip through Palawan.
