Singapore - The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple. Built in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple is located at 244 South Bridge Road in the heart of the Chinatown district. It primarily serves South Indian Tamil Hindu Singaporeans. Due to its architectural and historical significance, the temple is a National Monument and one of the city’s key tourist attractions. The Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, eight years after Singapore became a trading post of the British East India Company. Pillai was a government clerk from Penang who arrived in Singapore with Stamford Raffles on his second visit to the island in May 1819. He established the island’s first construction company and also ventured into the textile trade. Pillai quickly became a prominent figure in business and was recognized as a leader of the Indian community.
