Bangladesh - The Mosque City of Bagerhat is a once-forgotten town on the outskirts of Bagerhat city in southwestern Bangladesh. Located about 10 km southeast of Khulna and 150 km southwest of Dhaka, the town was originally known as Khalifatabad and nicknamed the “mint city” of the Bengal Sultanate. It was founded in the 15th century by the Turkish general and saint Ulugh Khan Jahan. Named one of the world’s 15 lost cities, Bagerhat reveals over 50 Islamic monuments uncovered after centuries of overgrowth. In 1983, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding architectural ensemble that reflects an important stage in human history. The most famous monument is the Sixty Dome Mosque (Shat Gombuj Masjid), featuring 60 pillars and 77 domes. Other notable monuments include the Mausoleum of Khan Jahan, and the Singar, Bibi Begni, Reza Khoda, and Zindavir mosques.
