Ireland - As the end of my journey approaches, I decide to visit the former monastery of Clonmacnoise in central Ireland. This location was historically an important trade center, located at the intersection of an east-west route and the river. Over the centuries, Clonmacnoise was destroyed sixteen times—by both the English and the Vikings. The complex was last destroyed at the end of the 16th century and was never rebuilt. The site houses a stunning example of an Irish high cross—an important symbol of Irish history and culture. Outside, a replica is on display, while the original is kept inside for preservation. In addition to the crosses, Clonmacnoise features several churches and round towers, all bearing witness to the site’s rich history. The crosses are not the only highlights. The churches and towers reflect the site's significance as a center of religion and culture in ancient Ireland. Though damaged, the churches remain impressive. The round towers reflect the complex social structures of that era. All in all, Clonmacnoise is a historically significant site in Ireland and well worth a visit. Its crosses and buildings provide a unique perspective on Irish history and culture and reveal how they have developed over the centuries.
