China - Dali, located in Yunnan province in southwest China, is a city known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful nature, and relaxed atmosphere. Situated between the Cangshan Mountains to the west and Erhai Lake to the east, Dali offers travelers a unique combination of natural beauty and historical depth. The city consists of the old town (Dali Ancient Town) and modern Dali (Xiaguan). Dali Ancient Town is the cultural heart of the region, known for its well-preserved traditional Bai architecture, cobbled streets, and colorful markets. The Bai, one of China’s 56 ethnic groups, make up a significant part of the population and strongly contribute to the local culture with their own language, costumes, and traditions. One of Dali’s most famous landmarks is the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, a symbol of the city more than a thousand years old. The middle pagoda, Qianxun, at 69 meters tall, is one of the tallest and oldest Buddhist structures in South China. The serene temple complexes around these pagodas attract thousands of visitors annually. The Cangshan Mountains directly west of the city offer many hiking trails and cable cars for adventurous travelers. The peaks are often shrouded in mist, adding to the area’s mystical atmosphere. From here, you have spectacular views over the city and Erhai Lake, a vast freshwater lake ideal for cycling, boating, and visiting traditional Bai villages such as Xizhou and Zhoucheng. Erhai literally means "Ear Sea" because its shape resembles an ear. Around the lake are many fishing villages where traditional life has been preserved. You can discover local crafts such as batik and silverwork and enjoy fresh fish dishes from the lake.
