Lebanon - The Jeita Grotto is an extraordinary cave complex in Lebanon, located about 18 kilometers north of the capital Beirut. The complex begins with the above-ground cave, also known as the upper grotto. The above-ground cave is impressive due to its imposing formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The chambers of the upper grotto have spectacular natural sculptures formed by millennia of dripping limestone deposits. After exploring the upper grotto, visitors proceed to the underground cave, also known as the lower grotto. A remarkable feature of the underground grotto is the presence of an underground lake. Visitors take part of the journey by boat, gliding through the crystal-clear waters of the lake surrounded by the limestone walls of the cave. The underground grotto houses the Mercury River, an underground river that provides a picturesque addition to the mystical surroundings. The Jeita Grotto is known as one of the most spectacular caves in the world and has received international recognition for its natural beauty. The complex was nominated as one of the finalists for the New Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
