Austria - Vienna is the capital and one of the largest cities in Austria. Nearly two million people live in Vienna — more than 25% of Austria’s population resides in the capital. The city is the cultural, economic, and political center of the country. Until the early 20th century, it was the largest German-speaking city in the world. Before World War I and the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the city had more than two million inhabitants. Vienna hosts many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city lies in eastern Austria, close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. Vienna developed from early Celtic and Roman settlements into a medieval and baroque city, eventually becoming the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Vienna played a crucial role as a leading European center for music during the golden era of Viennese Classicism through the early 20th century. The historic center of Vienna is rich in architectural landmarks, including baroque palaces and gardens, as well as the late 19th-century Ringstrasse, lined with impressive buildings, monuments, and parks.
