England - Stonehenge is a megalithic monument from the Neolithic period, located near Amesbury in the English county of Wiltshire, about 13 kilometers northwest of Salisbury on the Salisbury Plains. The most recent dating places the construction of Stonehenge around 2300 BC—300 years later than previously thought. The monument consists of an earthwork enclosing a circular arrangement of large, roughly hewn standing stones, and it is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Although the word “henge” is part of its name, it is not a true henge by definition. The monument and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986, together with the Avebury henge monument under the listing "Stonehenge, Avebury, and Associated Sites." It is also a legally protected ancient structure under British law. Stonehenge itself is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage. The surrounding lands are owned by the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest, commonly known in the UK as the National Trust.
