Nicaragua - After about half an hour, Belisario turns off the main road, and the bus drives into the parking lot of Masaya National Park. The gate is still closed. It turns out the staff is in a meeting, so we have to wait. The Masaya volcano is one of the most active in Nicaragua. Its last eruption was two years ago. Once the meeting ends, we’re allowed into the park. The Masaya volcano is easily accessible—there’s a road right to the crater rim. That’s unique. Everyone is advised to park their vehicle facing the exit, just in case they need to flee a sudden eruption. There are also signs advising people to take cover under their car if rocks are ejected. I trust the volcano will stay calm today. At the crater rim, I see a thick plume of smoke rising from the volcano. A striking sight. The stairs to the cross, once placed by the Spanish to drive away the devil, are closed due to landslides during the last eruption. The area is now too unsafe. I walk up the other side for a nice view over the crater and continue to the adjacent inactive crater, which is completely covered in vegetation.
