Switzerland - The Abbey of St. Gallen is located in the city of the same name, which developed around the monastery complex. We park in a garage in the Klosterviertel district. The cathedral towers rise above the city. A guide recommends visiting the monastery library first while it is still quiet. The abbey had an impressive collection of books as early as the 8th century. Its baroque library is one of the oldest in the world. Cameras must be stored in a locker. Overshoes are provided to protect the floors. Entering the library, I am speechless. Teakwood shelves across two floors house 50,000 ancient books, and together with baroque decorations and ceiling frescoes, the library is a masterpiece.
