Belgium - The University Library of Leuven is one of the most iconic buildings in Leuven and forms the symbolic heart of KU Leuven. The imposing building is located on Monseigneur Ladeuzeplein and immediately stands out due to its monumental appearance and tall tower. The current library was built between 1921 and 1928 in Flemish neo-Renaissance style, based on a design by the American architect Whitney Warren. It was constructed with international support, especially from the United States, after the original library was completely destroyed by fire in 1914 during the First World War. This loss—during which hundreds of thousands of books and manuscripts were destroyed—caused worldwide outrage and led to a major solidarity effort to rebuild both the collection and the building. The structure is not only a library but also a war memorial. Its façades are richly decorated with symbolic sculptures and commemorative plaques referring to the international assistance in its reconstruction. The tower contains a carillon with dozens of bells, donated by American organisations. Inside, there is an impressive reading room where high windows and wooden interiors create a dignified and scholarly atmosphere. The library houses an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, and academic works that reflect the long history of the university. Notably, the library was heavily damaged again during the Second World War when a fire in 1940 once more destroyed large parts of the collection. Nevertheless, it was rebuilt each time and developed into a powerful symbol of resilience and knowledge. Today, the University Library is not only an important place of study but also a historic monument and one of the best-known landmarks of Leuven.
