Belgium - After lunch, we continue walking through the city center and arrive at the Grand Place. The beautiful town hall proudly dominates with its tall town hall tower. In 1402, this prestigious building was constructed following the example of the Belfry in Bruges. Thirty years later, the wing to the right of the tower was added. If you look closely, you can clearly see the different architectural styles. After completion, various guild houses appeared around the square. Originally, many houses were built of wood, Christophe continues with his explanation. During the French attacks in 1695, the square was heavily bombarded, resulting in fires. Most of the houses were lost to the fire. During the reconstruction, the houses were built in stone. Opposite the town hall stands the former Breadhouse, a beautiful Gothic building. Today, it houses the Brussels Museum. The other buildings, mostly former guild houses, nicely complement the square. Each of these houses is magnificent and adorned with gilded statues and inscriptions. This makes the Grand Place a stunning location.
