Malta - The natural harbor of Marsaxlokk Bay is the second-largest in Malta. It is the best place to see the traditional, colorful Maltese fishing boats known as luzzu, with their mythical eyes painted on the bow. The village is the main fishing port of the islands. The Sunday fish market offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into local life and this traditional trade. The stalls are overflowing with freshly caught fish in every variety, color, and size. The village itself has many good fish restaurants. Marsaxlokk derives its name from the Arabic word marsa, meaning “harbor,” and the Maltese name for the southeastern Mediterranean wind, the Xlokk. With its sheltered bay, Marsaxlokk was an easy landing spot for pirates and the Ottoman Turks. It was here that the Ottomans landed to launch an attack that led to the Great Siege of 1565. Napoleon’s army came ashore here in 1798, and in more recent history, the harbor hosted the 1989 summit between President George H. W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev. The cape on the left side of the bay is Delimara Point. It features two attractive and sheltered rocky inlets where one can swim: Peter’s Pool and the tip of the cape. Fort Delimara, located on the western side of the peninsula, was built by the British in 1881 to guard the entrance to Marsaxlokk Bay.
