Ireland - Dublin Castle is one of the most important historical buildings in Dublin and played a central role in the governance of Ireland for centuries. The castle was originally built in the early 13th century, around 1204, on the orders of King John of England, shortly after the Norman invasion. It served as a fortified stronghold and as the seat of English, later British, authority in Ireland. Over the centuries, Dublin Castle was continuously modified and expanded. Of the medieval fortress, only one tower remains today: the Record Tower. The rest of the complex largely consists of Georgian-style buildings from the 18th century, which give the castle its present-day elegant appearance. A significant moment in the history of Dublin Castle took place in 1922, following Ireland’s independence. At that time, the castle was officially handed over to the new Irish government, marking the end of centuries of British rule. Since then, it has taken on a more ceremonial and administrative role. Within the complex are impressive state rooms, such as St. Patrick’s Hall, where presidential inaugurations are held. The richly decorated halls, with painted ceilings and golden details, reflect the power and grandeur of former governance. The Chapel Royal, a neo-Gothic chapel, is also a striking feature of the castle. Today, Dublin Castle is a popular tourist attraction and an important symbol of Irish history. It combines medieval remains with later architecture and tells the story of power, conflict, and ultimately independence.
